What Is Brainspotting ?

Brainspotting is an incredibly powerfully effective brain body based therapy that uses the position of the eyes to indicate a spot in the brain, that is believed to hold unprocessed trauma or negative emotions that cannot be reached by talking therapy.

Unprocessed trauma such as childhood traumas, (CPTSD) Narcissistic abuse, negative emotions can be triggered long after the event occurred, your nervous system still reacts as if it was experiencing it in the present pushing out cortisol into your bloodstream getting you ready to fight or run away, and in the process shutting down your logical thinking brain.

Brainspotting bypasses the logical thinking brain (neocortex) and works with the feeling part of the brain (the sub cortex) the part of the brain where emotions are stored.

Brainspotting was developed by a psychotherapist called David Grand and he believes that “Where you look affects how you feel” He discovered that by using a pointer to track a client’s eye movement whilst watching for bodily cues, together they can pinpoint a “brain spot” that holds the negative emotion or trauma.

How does Brainspotting heal Trauma ?

At the time of the trauma or event the brain wasn’t able to process, date stamp and store as it normally would, which in turn leads to the storage of the trauma in the body.

When the eye position that correlates to the most intense bodily reaction (whilst thinking about the memory or negative emotions), is found, the pointer is held at that spot, and you are encouraged to keep looking a the tip of the pointer

And that’s where the most wonderful experience happens for the you because accessing the trauma or negative emotions in a safe controlled space where the therapist is in complete attunement with you, allows the brain and body to begin to process and release the trauma.

What you can expect from a Brainspotting Session with me?

Together we will identify what you want to focus on for the session, then using a pointer to track your eye movements we will observe which eye positions trigger a response, such as a deep inhale, or facial twitch, sometimes a tear, I will be watching out for those and asking you what you are feeling.

We may also use bilateral sounds (music) at the same time to help the brain process and change the bodily response to the trauma or memory.

If a memory or trauma gets triggered, we will stay focused on that eye position which is referred to as a “Brainspot” and allow your brain to naturally start to process, you may feel strong emotions you may cry, or have a bodily response, and thats normal, we cant heal what we don’t feel.

You don’t have to talk or describe to me what is going on, I will be with you completely connected to your energy, (even over zoom !) attuned to your needs and your safety, and gently guide you through the session.
